Weight Lifting Belts for Deadlifts: Thinner, Lower, and Sometimes Not At All
Deadlift belting is genuinely different from squat belting, and most guides flatten the two together. In a squat you are already braced when the bar starts moving. In a deadlift you have to get into position first, hips back, ribs down, torso close to horizontal, and a belt that is too thick or fastened too tight actively fights you getting there.
This is why a lot of experienced lifters run a slightly looser hole for pulls than for squats, and why some strong deadlifters pull raw entirely.

The squat brace happens standing tall. You have maximum room between rib and hip, you fill your belly against the belt, and then you descend. The deadlift brace happens after you have hinged, which is the position where that gap is already compressed.
Fasten a belt at your squat tightness and then set up for a heavy pull and you will usually find one of two things: you cannot get your hips as low as you want, or you cannot get a full breath in at the bottom. Both cost you more than the belt returns.
One prong hole looser, or a couple of centimetres of velcro, generally solves it. This is one of the practical arguments for prong and velcro belts over levers. A lever is one fixed tightness for every lift you do that day.
Conventional versus sumo
Conventional pullers get their torso closer to horizontal, so the belt's front edge tends to jam into the top of the thighs and the hip crease. Lower placement and a thinner belt help.
Sumo pullers sit more upright but open the hips wide, which brings the hip bones into contact with the belt's lower edge from the side. A tapered belt, one narrower at the front than the back, is noticeably more comfortable here, which is one of the strongest arguments for a custom cut if you pull sumo and have a short torso.
When to pull without a belt
Belt the sets that are genuinely heavy and pull the rest raw. Every unbelted set is trunk training, and a lifter who belts everything from the first warm-up ends up with a brace that only works with hardware.
There is also a straightforward technique argument: if your back rounds under a given weight belted, it was rounding unbelted too, and the belt has hidden it rather than fixed it. Drop the weight.

At what weight should I use a belt for deadlifts?
Use percentage rather than an absolute weight: belt your work above roughly 80-85% of your one-rep max, and pull everything below that raw. The absolute number in pounds is meaningless across different lifters 185 lb is a warm-up for one person and a max for another.
Should a deadlift belt be tighter or looser than a squat belt?
Looser, for most lifters, usually one prong hole out from your squat setting. The deadlift brace happens after you have already hinged, which is the position where the gap between your ribs and hips is most compressed. A squat-tight belt in that position stops you getting your hips down and stops you taking a full breath.
Do I need a separate belt for deadlifts?
No. One 10mm belt with an adjustable closure covers both lifts. You simply run a different hole for each. A dedicated thinner deadlift belt is a competitive powerlifter's refinement, not a requirement.
Why does my belt dig into my hips when I deadlift?
Because the belt's lower edge is contacting your iliac crest once your hips open, which is more pronounced in a sumo stance and on shorter torsos. A tapered belt that narrows at the front, or a 3-inch cut, removes the contact. Wearing the belt slightly lower also helps for conventional pulls.
